My daughter is fascinated with her hands. I catch her staring at them several times a day as though she perpetually forgets (and subsequently remembers) just how lovely they are. Leighton's hands are her favorite body part. Feet come in a close second.
I started thinking about how incredibly awesome hands are and I hope Lei always feels awe inspired by her mighty mitts. I thought about all hands can do - create, cultivate and care for others. Between my mind and my hands, I feel that I can do just about anything.
And so, I try.
I have always reasoned that each of us has a finite amount of energy to expend in a lifetime, and we can use that energy to create or destroy. Or, I suppose the third option would be to waste the opportunity to do anything at all by procrastinating, worrying and just being plain lazy. How sad.
I prefer option one. I am a busy girl. I love to take on "projects". Anything that can be organized into bins and can drag on for weeks. Thrilling! I am proud of my hands - facilitators of change and implements of imagination. My hands are my favorite body part.
I was thinking about ways to relate this value to Leighton - how I would articulate the sentiment - but I figure she will learn by example. Hell, she's already trying to drink out of a cup.
